Late Fall brings some spectacular storm clouds to the Salish Sea.  Especially when they are lit by the setting sun.  In this painting, I wanted to capture the full range of colours from dark blue, green and purple to blazing yellow, orange, and pink hues.  There were a lot of very soft transitions in the clouds, but also some very hard lines with dark clouds in front of light clouds.  The foreground trees were in full silhouette, so there was minimal detail needed here, but I found the branches of the fir tree particularly fun to paint.  The fir tree also served to frame the thunder clouds and give depth and perspective to the painting.  The focus of the painting, however, is the clouds that are receiving the strongest rays of the setting sun.  These clouds seemed to be hiding a secret just out of site, like standing outside a room where a party is in full swing.  You can hear the music, but you can’t quite see what is going on inside.
