Painted April 2020. 12″ x 12″. Acrylic on Canvas
This view of the Rockies, is at the top of a hill right behind the house I grew up in. It holds a lot of memories for me. Late winter, brings a warm breeze off the Rockies that starts the snow melting along with the first signs of Spring. I had so many sense memories while I was doing this painting. For some reason, this view also makes me think of feeding cows with my Dad, there’s one field especially that provides a particularly breath-taking reveal of the Rockies when you come over the crest of the hill. Although it’s a very small painting, I painted it very carefully and put a lot of time into getting the mountains just the way I wanted. I have noticed, however, that the reference photo makes the mountains look a lot further away than they do when you’re there in person. I need to do some paintings “en plein-aire”, so avoid this problem. Anyway, this painting faithfully represents the mountain view that I grew up with. My own favourite part of this painting is how the early morning sun is hitting the top of the mountains and giving them just the touch of a rosy hue.
