Painted December 2020. 12″ x 12″. Acrylic on cradled wood panel. $144.00 Canadian. No Frame.
It occurred to me that I had never done a self-portrait, so for my last painting of 2020, I chose to base my self-portrait on a photo that I have from a pre-Covid trip to Puerto Vallarta. Enjoying the sunset from the infinity pool atop the Pinnacle Hotel was one of the best memories from that trip.
I like the hazy light that I captured and the reflection in the water was fun to paint. I still struggled with getting the right skin tones, but it’s definitely an improvement on my earlier work. I was pleased with the sense of shadow that I produced. Sunsets there are just so pleasant and relaxing. I also thought it was an interesting composition (although in retrospect, the pose is kind of “hammy”).
