This painting is part of a series of farm animals that I’m currently working on.  It’s an experimental painting where I’m trying to create a sense of texture using high contrast values and intense saturated colour against a dark muted background.  I’m not sure if I achieved the effect I was looking for, but it’s important to explore different techniques.  Since it’s a small painting, there’s less time lost in the lesson.

As for the subject matter, I will always enjoy painting chickens.  There is something about roosters that I find especially funny.  They seem overly confident considering that they are far down the pecking order of barnyard animals.  This extreme belief in themselves and their own inherent superiority is short lived when they are about to be flicked, swatted or stepped on.  I chose a composition that had the rooster almost exploding out of the canvas, with no other objects in the painting to compete with their confident pose.  The rooster and it’s beautiful plumage is the principal message in this painting.
