Painted February 2019. 30 cm. x 40 cm. Acrylic on Canvas
A friend posted this unusual picture of him swimming in Hawaii. The angle that the photo was taken really felt like you were right there with the swimmer. This was a little painting that started with a graphite drawing that I loved (very moody, with storm clouds on the horizon). Unfortunately, the painting lost that atmospheric sense. The clouds became too stylized and almost look like mountains. I couldn’t create that atmospheric feeling that I was looking for. The other thing I was trying for was lots of movement/activity in the water. I didn’t quite achieve that either. However, as a painting, it is interesting. Especially as your eye is actually drawn off the canvas. This is probably a reference photo that deserves a second chance.
