There are some scenes that live permanently in my head, and which I will forever try capturing through paint and canvas. At the top of that list would be morning sunrises over the Alberta foothills. As the prairie stretches out to the East, the earliest rays of sunshine hit the clouds over the Rockies through a thick prism of atmosphere, creating a spectacular range of oranges, purples, reds and yellows. Cloud formations over the mountains light up in different colours, creating flowing patterns of light and dark. The scene changes minute by minute as the sun rises, making for a kaleidoscope of colours that usually render me speechless. Although nowhere near as impressive as the real thing, I think these morning sunrises are a great source for beautiful paintings.
This particular painting was based on a photo my cousin Lorna took from her porch looking Eastward out towards Corner Mountain. This is the same mountain that is visible from the house where I grew up, but from a completely different angle (it lies to the West). The early rays of sun bouncing off the clouds created a form that had great movement and drama like a symphony of light. I got carried away while I was painting the morning clouds in this landscape and pushed their abstraction a little further than originally intended. I guess that in this symphonic painting the percussion and symbols were given free reign.
