Riding horses is an integral part of life on a working cattle ranch. Although we had a number of horses to choose from, My favourite was a small buckskin we named Bimbo. This horse miraculously appeared one Spring, trotting beside his mother, a sweet Albino mare with bad eye-sight who had been a gift from my grandfather when I was five. Since the horses had spent the winter on their own and the fact that we had no stallions on the ranch, a newborn horse was a big surprise. Bimbo’s father was probably an Arab stallion that we’d found wandering a back road and had put in the field while the owner came to collect him. The result of this brief dalliance was a beautiful buckskin pony with boundless energy and a really sweet disposition. I spent a lot of time on that horse exploring the foothills or doing chores around the ranch. Bimbo never seemed to tire and he was always willing to deliver whatever was asked of him. We also competed in a number of Western riding events locally. There’s a real bond when you spend that much time with a horse.
