After we’ve taken a horse out for a long ride, we were taught to give them a rubdown and a careful curry with comb or brush. I always enjoyed this task, and the horse usually did as well. When the brush down is completed and the horse let out into the field, there is a moment that the horse will often go into a happy little canter. It was a true expression of the joy that comes with freedom and I wanted this painting to reflect that feeling.
I found this painting a technical challenge as well. When currying a horse, you spend a lot of time brushing over muscles, understanding the curves of a horse and where the muscles are supported by the skeletal structure, where they bulge and where there disappear into the body. I wanted to do a horse painting that explored this element and how light reflecting off the body of a horse indicates what is going on underneath that beautiful coat.
