As Spring has hit the West Coast, I wanted to get in the right mood for my big landscaping project by doing another flower painting. This time I chose to paint some wild Blanket flowers (Gaillardia aristata). Due to their deer resistant properties and the hot dry nature of my South facing yard, these self-seeding wildflowers will be a great addition to my garden.
These plants can also handle growing next to the ocean. They have become a beautiful feature of the Outer Bank islands off the coast of North Carolina where they are called “Joebells” after an early settler (Joe Bell), who brought them to the islands. I am hoping that they will find our ocean facing front yard the perfect environment to grow and thrive. If not, then at least I’ll have a painting to remind me of my folly.
I thought the composition of this painting was one of its strong points. The flowers form a spiral starting at the bottom of the painting and ends with the largest blanket flower in the lower left hand corner. The flowers almost feel like musical notation and the rhythm of the flowers represent a song of summer.
