“Fading Memories of Summer.”

Painted on September 2024.  16”x20”. Acrylic on stretched canvas. $340.00 (framed).

I wanted to challenge myself on this painting in a number of ways. It was time I took a crack at another flower painting and was drawn to the complexity of the peony.  However, this time I wanted to explore the boundary between representation and abstraction. I did this by pushing in so close to the peony that it becomes difficult to understand if it’s a flower or not. I also wanted to play with soft and hard edges and see if I could get better at blending (something I struggle with when using acrylic paint). I used the shadows as negative space to define the form of the flower. Lastly, I wanted to create a painting that would also work as an abstract painting. I’m not sure it was as successful as I had originally envisioned, but I had fun painting it and making the frame it sits in.
