Periodically, I like to paint chickens or roosters. It’s a palate cleanser between courses, where I can explore different colour combinations and techniques. Fortunately, there is a wide range of chicken types to choose from. An endless variety of textures, colours, silhouettes and shapes to work with and a lot of freedom to explore. I like to keep the background very simple and let the subject shine. In this case I went for a vibrant red background which goes against my typical approach of using a muted background colour. It’s always good to break your own rules and explore a different approach. I like how this painting turned out, especially when it is properly lit by track lighting. The rooster can handle the intense orange-red background and in fact seems to pop out of the painting. This small painting punches above it’s own weight, which seems appropriate for a fancy rooster like this.
