In my painting course, we did a session on broken colour technique, so I thought it would be a good idea to use this technique on my next painting. Small daubs of pure colour are painted on the canvas side-by-side. Your brain takes the input and “sees” a third colour. It’s an effective technique and well worth the effort.

For this painting, I chose a picture I took while touring New England.  The sun was going down, the fishing boats were tied up for the night and there was a beautiful contract between boats in shadow and those still reflecting the last rays of a setting sun.  It was my first time painting boats and I found it a bit of a struggle.  But, like any challenge, the more you face your fears, the easier it gets.

The other challenge in this painting was to paint the water so that it properly represented that slight rippling that occurred and the various light reflections that it created.
