In preparation for my next big painting, I wanted to try a small still life that focussed on shadow and light. For subject matter I chose a simple pear, nestled within a drop cloth. Since there was a strong light source coming in from the left, I was able to create contrast and depth. This was a quick painting, so I didn’t get caught up in a lot of detail (a trap that I’ve fallen into before). Finally, the dominant colours are orange-yellow, and a sort of green-blue. I chose these colours because I wanted the pear to pop out in contrast to the blue background and let the yellow and orange dominate. It now sits on our kitchen wall close to the sliding doors. A spot that gets a regular rotation of 12”x12” paintings.
